Rick Steves Purchases $4 Million Apartment Complex For Homeless Women And Children To Live In For Free
Travel Writer and Guru, Rick Steves, believes in investing money, but not in the traditional way.
“Rick’s investment is in people, community, and as he says, it could be more rewarding [than money],” K5 News Reporter says.
After he made his big time break as one of the Travel Channel’s long-time hosts, Rick set out to help young, single women become the successful mothers they wish to be.
In 2005, Rick purchased Trinity Place apartment complex for the sole purpose of housing single mothers who are down on their luck.
He never collected rent from the residents, instead, his income is the equity the complex gains as it appreciates in value over time.
“Imagine the joy of knowing that I could provide a simple two-bedroom apartment for a mom and her kids as she fought to get her life back on track.”
Although Steves initially wanted to leave the complex in his will for the YWCA, he decided to change his mind and take it one step further: donate it to them right now. This will allow the YWCA to help those in need for a long time to come.
