Teacher Creatively Defends Student Getting Teased for Her Hairstyle by Styling Her Hair the Same Way

A teacher from Lithia Springs, Georgia recently went above and beyond the usual protocol to help a student that was getting teased and bullied by other students.

It happened at Anette Winn Elementary School, where teacher Kinsie Johns, teaches students in the third grade.

That’s also where she found out that one of her students was getting called out for wearing her hair in a style known as “space buns”. When the little girl had her hair like that on Tuesday, by Wednesday, students had already been calling her “space girl”.

Mrs. Johns was upset by this happening in her classroom and so she began to hatch a plan against it. She wrote herself a reminder on her hand as to what they’d been doing.

The next day, the students that teased the little girl had their eyes go wide when they saw Mrs. Johns. And the little girl herself, her eyes were even more wide.

“She was beaming when she saw me and the students noticed that our hair looked the same.”

Kinsie posted on Facebook to encourage students to be themselves. She wanted everyone to know that it’s okay to be different and even quoted Dr. Seuss,

“Why fit in when you were born to stand out?”

The day after Kinsie wore her matching space buns, the students decided to shock her right back. They rallied around her and their classmate and copied them.

“The little point I was trying to make turned into a huge support for my little friend.”

“All the girls in my class are wearing their hair in ‘space buns’ and even some of the boys got involved!”

What an amazing and creative way to support her students, don’t you think?
