Elderly Man Produces Stunning Pieces of Art Using Only a Typewriter and Keystrokes
Paul Smith was born with cerebral palsy on September 21st, 1921. In 1967, he moved into the Rose Haven home in Oregon. Since he was a young boy, he has created art using the most interesting tool, a typewriter. Paul uses his fingers to type the first ten of the symbol keys and shapes them into remarkable portraits, scenes, and landmarks from his life.
His art decorates the halls of Rose Haven, and he is one of their local celebrities. Paul is modest however, he just hopes he can continue his favourite pastime, creating amazing art.
Whether it’s the # symbol to recreate the Mona Lisa, or the @ symbol as drawer handles, Mr. Smith is able to make the most amazing of portraits with symbols on a typewriter.
Although many people are astounded by this amazing talent, Paul states that it’s just “something to do”.
The residents and staff of the nursing home are the only family Paul has left and it’s great to see that he’s able to share his passionate work with the home by putting it up for display.
