Valentine’s Day is almost here and love is in the air. As such, we’d like to take a moment to observe a particularly…interesting couples’ activity. Every couple has their own special inside jokes or traditions. They may have a strange way of greeting one another or a secret handshake. These behaviors might seem odd from the outside looking in, but they’re perfectly normal.

Then there are behaviors like this.

A town in Finland has become the home of the annual Wife-Carrying World Championships. The “sport”, if you’d like to call it, requires men to carry their wives while completing an obstacle course race.

There are three ways to carry wives in this competition: piggyback, over the shoulder, or “Estonian-style”, where the husband carries his wife upside down, with her arms around his torso and her legs over his shoulders. Estonian-style is currently the most popular in competition.

As a reward, the winning team is granted the wife’s weight in beer. Hopefully, they’re not required to drink it on the spot. That would be one whopper of a hangover.
