Not long after turning 30, Dawn lost her sense of hearing. Her speech recognition was almost entirely gone as well, and so hearing aids were never an option for her. She communicated with her family by reading lips, and it’s almost impossible for her to follow a conversation in a group.
15 years later, doctors tell her that she may have the chance to get back her hearing. She was a candidate for a cochlear implant. But the decision of having the surgery was frightening because the prospect of hearing her son’s voice for the very first time was almost too much.
