Recently, a gay night club in Orlando was the setting for the worst mass shooting in American history. The tale of this vicious hate crime is filled with tragedy and sorrow and, so far, little light has been found in reflecting on such a dark night.
That said, one police officer in Orlando who reported to the scene of the crime has something valuable that he was very close to losing – his life.
In the hail of gunfire that finally stopped the suspect bloody rampage, an Orlando Police Department officer was struck with a bullet. Thanks to his kevlar safety helmet, his life was spared. Kevlar is a bullet proof and stab-resistant material, which is why it’s frequently used in police and military-grade equipment.
Helmets like this one, much like the gun of a police officer, are something that are critical for an officer to have, but hopefully, they’ll never need.
