Homeless Man Gave Woman with Car Trouble His Last $20, So She Thanked Him with $227K

You never know when you’ll need a helping hand—and you never know when you can repay someone else’s kindness.

Kate McClure was driving to Philadelphia from her home in New Jersey, and ran out of gas on the highway. She was scared, both of running out of gas and the long walk to the nearest gas station.

Then she met Johnny.

“Johnny sits on the side of the road every day, holding a sign. He saw me pull over and knew something was wrong,” Kate wrote in her GoFundMe campaign. “He told me to get back in the car and lock the doors. A few minutes later, he comes back with a red gas can. Using his last 20 dollars to make sure I could get home safe.”

He didn’t ask her for a dollar, but she knew she had to pay him back—so she started a GoFundMe campaign to help him out. So far, the campaign has raised over $227,000!
