Man Wielding 2 Knives Run into Public Library, 75 y/o Army Veteran Ready to Fight

When a 75-year-old veteran was teaching a library full of children about chess, he never thought his specialized military training would come in so remarkably handy.

Army veteran James Vernon volunteers at the Morton public library in Illinois and couldn’t believe his eyes when he looked up to see a man standing in the doorway wielding what looked to be a hunting knife in each hand.

With sixteen children ages 7-14 learning how to play chess inside the library, Vernon knew he had to step up to save the kids from any potential harm.

Vernon tells the Washington Post that one thought went through his mind: “This can’t happen here and I’m not going to let it happen. These kids are my responsibility right now.”

Dustin Brown, the 19-year-old screaming “I’m going to kill some people!” approached the crowd but was faced with the Army vet who stood in front of the kids trying his best to settle him down.

With each step James got closer to the assaulter, Dustin would take a step back, scared that he James would try something.

Vernon’s attempts to talk the victim failed as he tells the Daily Times “I didn’t, but I did deflect his attention.” Soon enough, the knife-wielding assailant had moved well away from the doorway. “I gave [the kids] the cue to get the heck out of there, and, boy, they did that!” Vernon said.

But after brown noticed all the soft targets were gone, he decided to turn his full attention to the vet. Drawing from his military training, Vernon was able to block a slash to his left hand but suffered cut arteries and a tendon in the process.

“I should have hit his wrist,” Vernon tells the Daily Times. “That’s how you’re trained, but it’s been half a century.” Vernon was able to throw Brown onto the table and was able to disarm the attacker from the knives and held him down until police arrived.

The 75-year-old is lucky to walk away with only a few injuries after saving the 16 children and is happy to have had military training in the past.

James Vernon has been hailed a hero and luckily with his quick-thinking and heroic moves, he was able to control the situation and save the children from a very dangerous situation.
