Sometimes the greatest discoveries are made by accident. This was most certainly the case in an old house in Reading. When builders were tearing down the old chimney, they came across a letter written to Santa Claus in 1943. Remarkably, it was in almost perfect condition.
While it’s not uncommon to find things in old chimneys, something like this is so rare. It’s a wonderful insight into Britain in the middle of WWII. One of the builders, Lewis Shaw, uploaded an image of the letter onto Facebook to show how times had changed. Next thing he knew, the little boy (all grown up now) wound up getting in touch with him. Feeling the Christmas spirit, they all pitched in to get him the gifts he asked for.
