Major Brian Dennis of the United States Marine Corps was in Iraq training Iraqi soldiers when he first met Nubs. Stationed near the western border with Jordan, there were many other stray dogs but Nubs was different. Having had his ears cut off, he and the soldiers affectionately referred to him as Nubs.

He became a routine feature and something of a mascot, but they had to relocate to a different base more than 70 miles away. Nubs started to follow but eventually trailed off. Amazingly, several days later and 70 miles further, Nubs shows up on the new base to the surprise of everyone. Needless to say, they moved mountains to get this dog to the United States.
