Jay Kopelman was a Lieutenant-Colonel serving in Fallujah, Iraq back in 2007. Every single day he sees a reminder of his time in combat but thankfully, it’s a pleasant memory. Lava was a five month old puppy that he stumbled across in Iraq and, stubborn as ever, refused to leave Jay alone. A very deep bond was formed.

Unfortunately, regulations say that soldiers are not allowed to have pets under any circumstances. Having to be super secretive, he and some friends and colleagues had to hide Lava, and even came up with epic plans to get the dog out of the country. It was quite an impressive undertaking, and had an incredibly happy ending for both involved.
