Rarely it is a bad idea to go for a swim (unless you see Jaws). It’s often pleasant, fun, and refreshing in the heat of summer. However, there are those that swim for a far more compelling reason; their very freedom and future. Escaping persecution, Yahya Samatar’s journey took him from Somalia to Brazil, and then hiked through jungle to Colombia and Central America, was detained in America, and then made his way to Canada for his fateful swim.

Having gone halfway around the world to get to that very spot in search of freedom, Canada decided this young man was worthy of finding a new home in the Great White North. A great story of someone who stopped at nothing to find a new land to begin again, and testament to the good folks in Ottawa who gave a new start to someone in need of one.
