Here in North America, what little that most of us know about ballet is a perception of it being quiet, elegant, and graceful. This kind of ballet is the complete opposite, and goes by the name ‘Hopak’ or ‘Cossack dance’. It’s a traditional Ukrainian dance that has been incorporated into operas and ballets around the world.

In reality, it may as well be called traditional Slavic breakdancing. The incredible moves, the soaring heights of the dancers, and the numerous spins, kicks, and flips all suggest that eastern Europe knew about hip hop before hip hop had even been invented. This is ballet if it was fast and loud. All it’s missing are some hip hop beats.
