Soldiers deserve our profound and sincere respect for their services. Military Working Dogs (MWD) deserve that same respect. They also deserve a home. Staff Sgt. Julian McDonald adopted Layka, the U.S. military combat dog that saved his life, even if many claimed her temperament too wild.

According to National Geographic, Layka was shot four times by the enemy during a mission. Despite the injuries that resulted in the amputation of a leg, Layka continued to protect Sgt. McDonald by subduing the shooter. Her actions saved his life and the other members of the team.

He gave a safe, loving home for the retired vet and hopes to encourage others to adopt retired MWDs.
