22 y/o Living with Down Syndrome, First to Win Multiple Awards at a Beauty Pageant

Those living with down syndrome have the same willpower and are just as capable as the rest of us to do what they want.

22-year-old Mikayla Holmgren proved this to be true as she was the first person to compete in a Miss USA state beauty pageant living with down syndrome.

She has competed in previous junior pageants before and was even crowned Miss Minnesota Miss Amazing in 2015.“I’m really good at them because it’s my passion,” she told KSTP news channel after the event in the city of Burnsville.

“Anybody that spends even five minutes with her knows that she is the right person to be the first to represent a community of people that need to see themselves doing something like this,” said the competition’s executive director Denise Wallace.

Mikayla was born six-and-a-half weeks early and her parents were unsure of her future Although she is the first to compete in a pageant with down syndrome, it will definitely not be her last.

Even though she was not crowned Miss Minnesota at the pageant, she did not leave empty-handed and was awarded the spirit of Miss USA award and the Director’s award.

With the passion to chase her dreams, her future is looking brighter for bigger things to come.
