There Are Actual Glow-In-The-Dark Beaches in the Maldives—See for Yourself
Animals are capable of so many cool things.
Thanks to tiny organisms inhabiting the sand, these beaches in the Maldives actually glow in the dark.
No, really.
These organisms are called ostracod crustaceans, according to Cornell biology professor James Morin. They’re often mistaken for phytoplankton.
When something comes in contact with the water (like a foot, for instance), ostracods can emit light for up to a full minute.
You can view this wonder in other places around the world—San Diego, Jamaica, Belgium, and Puerto Rico are just a few of the places with glow in the dark beaches.
