End of Chemo Celebrations in Vegas Turned Deadly, Mom & Daughter Share Their Story

After the tragedies that happened at the Route 91 Festival on October 1st 2017, survivors have been coming out with their stories about the horrible events and their perspectives have helped shed a lot of light on the situation. Two of these people are Kelley and Cassidy Pettit huff, a mom and daughter duo, who were present at the festival to celebrate Cassidy’s long fight with cancer.

After missing it the previous year, Cassidy had asked her mom if they could go and even though the tickets were already sold out, Kelley managed to get her hands on some. Scared that she wouldn’t be strong enough to go to the festival, Cassidy proved her mom’s worries wrong and completed her chemo 5 weeks before the festival! This lead the pair to spend an amazing weekend together at the festival, meeting hundreds of kind souls at the event.

Having the chance for Cassidy to spend a weekend surrounded by the unconditional love and happiness that you can only find at music festivals was great for her after having lived through such a difficult year. Her mom had the following to say on Facebook about it:

I am so thankful for great friends, Kyle and April Curish-Arndt, Glenn and Lorraine Rockwell and Robert Honea who watched over us and helped us navigate the busy festival. It was so crowded. I am so thankful for every concert goer, perfect strangers, who came up to Cassidy and gave her a high-five, or a fist bump, or a hug, offered words of encouragement or shared their stories of a loved one who is fighting or fought cancer. It was so heartwarming to feel the love from people we didn’t even know and it made me so happy.

She went on further in her message to talk about a certain cowboy that took Cassidy by the hand and showed her a few traditional country moves:

I am so thankful for that unknown, shirtless cowboy who came up to Cassidy and said, “I want to dance with you…just follow my steps.” He shuffled his feet a bit, twirled her around, dipped her and set her down leaving her with a big kiss on the top of her bald head. She had the biggest smile. It brought her joy. Good, great, awesome people were at that festival.

As we all know, the next part of their story gets darker and sadder in the chaos and terror that rained over the festival. The pair, clueless as to what was going on, started running as quickly as possible once they realized their lives were at risk. Kelley immediately had Cassidy on her feet and her husband on the phone, figuring out just how they were going to get out safely. Between crawling and running, and Cassidy still coming back from chemo, she started to slow down and they had to stop. Without missing a beat, an off-duty officer came in, picked up Cassidy and kept them moving along.

A few minutes later, we took cover behind another big truck when a retired Long Beach police officer told us to keep moving and his daughter, who is also a Long Beach police officer, put Cassidy on her back and ran. He told his wife to take us to their car and get us home and come back for him later. What a selfless thing to do.

The duo finally made it to the MGM Grand parking lot before the roads were closed down and managed to get home by 11:15 PM that same night, now out of harm’s way. Working through all the different emotions that come along with living through a traumatic event like this, the girls are still figuring out how to cope. But Kelley, being the strong mom she is, chooses to focus on all the goodness and kindness of people she saw that night and during the festival.

I will pray continually for all those affected by this tragedy. Healing will take time. BUT I MUST THANK EACH PERSON WHO ASSISTED US SUNDAY NIGHT AND GOT US SAFELY HOME TO MY HUSBAND AND MY OTHER THREE LITTLE GIRLS. I LOVE YOU LIKE I HAVE KNOWN YOU FOREVER AND I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU!!!! ???
